Transferring Your Domain from Squarespace to Wix

Transferring a domain from Squarespace to Wix moves both the registration and management of your domain to Wix, making it your new domain registrar. This process is straightforward when you follow the proper steps.

Prepare Your Domain in Squarespace

Before initiating the transfer, you need to prepare your domain on Squarespace. Log in to your Squarespace account and navigate to Settings > Domains. Select the domain you wish to transfer and unlock it by disabling the Domain Lock feature. Then request the Authorization Code (also called EPP code), which will either appear in your domain settings or be emailed to you. This code is essential for verifying your ownership.

Important consideration: Ensure your domain has been registered with Squarespace for at least 60 days. ICANN rules prevent transfers within 60 days of initial registration or previous transfers.

Start the Transfer in Wix

Once you have your authorization code, log in to your Wix account and go to Settings > Domains. Click on "Add an Existing Domain" and select "Transfer a Domain to Wix." Enter your domain name and when asked about your current provider, select "Other" since Squarespace isn't typically listed as a default option.

You'll be prompted to enter the authorization code from Squarespace. After entering it, choose your preferred registration or renewal period. The transfer includes a renewal fee based on your domain extension pricing at Wix. Complete the payment to officially initiate the transfer process.

Confirm and Complete the Transfer

After initiating the transfer, check your email for a confirmation message from Squarespace. To expedite the process, approve the transfer via the link provided in the email. Without manual approval, the transfer will automatically complete after a waiting period.

The entire transfer typically takes between 1 to 7 days to complete after confirmation. During this time, your website should remain accessible, but it's wise to monitor the transition.

Post-Transfer Setup

Once the transfer is complete, Wix becomes your official domain registrar. You'll manage all DNS settings directly from your Wix dashboard. Connect your Wix website to the newly transferred domain and publish your site. Consider setting up any necessary redirects to preserve your SEO rankings and ensure visitors find your site without interruption.

Remember that transferring your domain is different from simply connecting it. When you transfer, you're moving the registration itself to Wix, whereas connecting a domain leaves the registration with Squarespace while pointing it to your Wix site.
