About Wix

How do I connect my existing domain to my Wix website?

Connecting your existing domain to your Wix website is straightforward and can be done using two primary methods. Here's what you need to know to get your custom domain up and running.

Method 1: Connect Using Name Servers (Recommended)

This is the most popular and reliable method for connecting your domain to Wix.

Step 1: Add Your Domain to Wix

Log in to your Wix account and navigate to your Wix Domains page. Click on Add an Existing Domain and select Connect a domain you already own. Choose the Wix site you want to connect it to and enter your domain name.

Step 2: Get Your Wix Name Servers

After verifying domain ownership, Wix will provide you with two Name Servers:

  • ns10.wixdns.net
  • ns11.wixdns.net

Copy these carefully as you'll need them for the next step.

Step 3: Update Name Servers at Your Registrar

Log in to your domain registrar (where you purchased your domain, such as Namecheap or GoDaddy). Find the DNS or Name Server settings for your domain and replace the existing Name Servers with the Wix Name Servers you copied.

Step 4: Confirm and Wait

Return to Wix and confirm that you've updated your Name Servers. DNS propagation typically takes up to 48 hours, though it's often much faster.

Method 2: Connect Using DNS Records

If you prefer to keep your DNS management at your current registrar, you can connect using A and CNAME records instead.

When adding your domain to Wix, select the Connect using DNS records option. Wix will provide specific A and CNAME records that you need to add in your registrar's DNS management section. This method also requires up to 48 hours for propagation.

Important Tips

Choose the Right Method: The Name Server method is simpler and gives Wix full control over your DNS settings. The DNS record method is better if you need to maintain other services with your current DNS provider.

Double-Check Your Records: Always verify that you've entered the correct Name Servers or DNS records exactly as provided by Wix. Even a small typo can prevent your domain from connecting properly.

Be Patient: DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours globally, though changes often appear much sooner. During this time, your site may be intermittently accessible.

Premium Plan Required: Remember that connecting a custom domain requires a premium Wix plan. If you don't have one yet, you'll need to upgrade before your domain can be fully connected.
